Structural Monitoring

Track structural performance with precision, from subtle early
changes to long-term behaviour.

Detect problems before they become structural failures.

Structural elements rarely fail without warning. Long before cracks widen, joints separate, bearings deform or beams deflect excessively, the structure has already begun to change shape internally. Our monitoring systems detect these early signals and give engineers reliable, real-time insight into how structural elements are behaving
Our solutions

Comprehensive Structural
Monitoring Solutions

We offer a complete suite of structural testing services designed to confirm capacity, stiffness and performance across piles, anchors and structural elements. All tests are instrumented, controlled and delivered with clear, reliable data.

Structural Health Monitoring

Structural Health Monitoring brings multiple sensor technologies into a single integrated system that tracks how a structure behaves in real time and over long periods. By correlating strain, displacement, temperature, vibration and load response, SHM gives engineers a unified understanding of performance, ageing, and long-term structural behaviour.
Applications
  • Buildings
  • Bridges and elevated structures
  • Reinforced concrete elements
  • Structural steel frameworks
  • Pile-supported foundations

Structural Monitoring Technologies

Modern structural monitoring relies on a range of specialised sensors that measure different aspects of structural behaviour. From fibre optics and strain gauges to GNSS displacement systems, load cells, crack meters and tilt sensors, these technologies work together to provide a detailed picture of how structures deform, move and respond to changing conditions.

Distributed fibre optics provide continuous measurement along structural elements and are especially suited to reinforced concrete, structural steel, and deep structural components.

Capabilities

Distributed Temperature (DSS)

  • Measures bending, flexure, strain gradients, and load response

  • Ideal for beams, slabs, bridge decks, pile shafts, and structural members

Distributed Strain (DTS)

  • Tracks temperature gradients inside concrete

  • Supports curing control, crack prevention, and long-term thermal behaviour

Distributed Acoustics (DAS)

  • Detects cracking events, impact loads, and unusual vibration signatures

  • Useful for bridges and structural steel requiring event detection

High-precision GNSS provides millimetric 3D displacement data for large structures where global movement must be monitored.

Applications

  • Bridges and elevated platforms

  • Multi-storey buildings

  • Tall structures and towers

  • Structural drift, settlement, or movement over time

Strain gauges measure how structural materials behave under load.

Instrumentation Includes

  • Arc-weldable strain gauges for steel

  • Embedded rebar strain gauges in reinforced concrete

  • Surface-mounted vibrating wire strain gauges

  • Long-term strain monitoring for beams, slabs, columns, and girders

Load cells measure applied force within structural systems and are essential for understanding how loads are transferred and carried.

Load Cell Types Installed

  • Vibrating wire load cells

  • Centre-hole load cells for anchors and tendons

  • Bearing plate/jacking load cells

  • Beam-type load cells for steel frameworks

  • Compression load cells for columns and load-bearing supports

Crack and joint behaviour often provides early indication of structural distress.

Instrumentation Includes

  • Vibrating wire crack meters

  • Linear displacement transducers

  • Concrete joint meters

  • Laser displacement sensors

  • Mechanical crack gauges

Tilt sensors provide sensitive measurement of angular rotation in structural elements.

Applications

  • Building facades and walls

  • Bridge piers

  • Tall vertical structures

  • Structural steel frameworks

  • Retaining walls (structural types)

Inclinometers and IPI strings are used inside structural elements, not in soil, where internal rotation or shear must be monitored.

Applications

  • Embedded into piles

  • Cast into retaining wall structures

  • Incorporated into concrete forms requiring internal deformation tracking

Laser sensors provide non-contact measurement for precision structural movement tracking.

Applications

  • Structural expansion joints

  • Bridge components

  • Wall displacement

  • Monitoring separation or closure across structural gaps

Settlement cells measure vertical displacement beneath structural foundations or slabs.

Applications

  • Foundation pads

  • Pile-supported slabs

  • Building platforms

  • Long-term settlement/heave behaviour

Construction-Stage Structural Monitoring

During excavation, refurbishment or staged construction, structures can behave unpredictably as loads shift and support conditions change. Construction-stage monitoring tracks movement, strain and stability in real time, allowing engineers to identify risks early and protect adjacent buildings, temporary works and partially completed structures.
Structural monitoring during construction can be provided where required, including:
  • Monitoring adjacent buildings during excavation
  • Structural movement during refurbishments or alterations
  • Monitoring temporary supports, props, and shoring
  • Instrumenting structural components during construction phases

Interaction With Ground Behaviour

Structural movement is often influenced by underlying ground and foundation behaviour. When required, structural monitoring can be integrated with deformation or groundwater instrumentation to provide a combined view of how the structure and its foundations interact, offering deeper insight into the root causes of movement or distress.

Telemetry & Data Integration

Telemetry and data integration bring all structural sensors into a unified digital system, allowing engineers to access live readings, analyse long-term trends and receive automated alarms. By combining reliable hardware with secure, scalable data architecture, our telemetry solutions ensure structural performance can be monitored remotely with confidence.
All structural sensors can be integrated into telemetry systems, offering:
  • Continuous or interval-based monitoring
  • Remote access and dashboards
  • Real-time alarms
  • Long-term data storage
  • Secure and scalable architecture
